AOP Shining Star

Shining StarJayme Montgomery has been very busy since her graduation from AOP in 2007.  Jayme, now State Director of Campaign Against Violence (CAV) (the Wisconsin affiliate of the League of Young Voters Education Fund) — where she completed her apprenticeship — recently returned from a trip to Copenhagen. She was invited by the United Nations Climate Negotiations to represent the voice of young urban Americans in the discourse around climate change and associated policies. During her trip, Jayme participated in press conferences, sat on panels, and met with elected officials.

Jayme also recently received the Midwest Environmental Advocates’ “Lightning Rod” award, which is given annually to honor the exemplary contributions that individuals and groups make to conservation in Wisconsin. Jayme accepted this award on behalf of the Campaign Against Violence and as the leader of the Making Milwaukee Green Coalition (MMGC), an intergenerational collaborative effort advocating for green jobs, green businesses, and a wide range of green development projects in Milwaukee, including urban agriculture and renewable energy. CAV and MMGC assisted in organizing the community and getting the Milwaukee Common Council to withdraw the idea of privatizing Milwaukee’s drinking water through the Keep Public Our Water (KPOW) campaign. Keep up the phenomenal work, Jayme!
